Practice with a purpose

Like most people, I bet the only time you go to the range is just before a round and all you do is beat 30+ balls into submission without any awareness of where they are going. You also probably start with a wedge and work your way up to a driver, probably hitting 5-10 balls with each.

Why everyone does this is the real mystery. During a round of golf you hit a different club every shot (or at least you should).

Here are a couple better ways to warm up before a round (assuming you are not running late and have time).

First way

  1. grab your 7 or 8 iron and hit about 10 to 15 balls to get good and loose.

  2. then hit 3 balls each with a sand wedge, 9 iron, 5 iron, wood or hybrid and driver.

  3. then hit 3-5 balls with the club you are going to use on your first hole.

Second way

  1. grab your 7 or 8 iron and hit about 10 to 15 balls to get good and loose.

  2. play the holes in order, whatever club you hit on the first hole (usually driver) hit it and then depending on how you hit it choose the club that would get you to the green. If you think you would have missed the green use a club you would chip or pitch on with. Do this for as many holes as you want, but at least 4 holes will get you mentally prepared to play.

No matter how you choose to warm up, ALWAYS us an alignment stick or club and choose an aiming point. If you don't have flags or something on your range, pick something in the distance like a house, tree, etc. This way you know how far left or right you go.

The best alignment training aid is the Tour Aim. It can be used for full swing, putting, chipping pitching and full swing angles to help you get in the correct position. Click the link below and get 15% off on your Tour Aim right now.
